Touch-Up Conditioners |

I'm wondering what type and brand of conditioner y'all use during the touch-up process (if any). I have used Revlons' Porosity Control (pH 4.5) and ION's Reconstructor. Both work just fine, but I decided to "fix it even though it wasn't broke". So, I tried Affirm's 5 'n 1 because I've been dying to try it. After rinsing it out, my hair was immediately hard and tangled. What do y'all use and when during the touch-up process? I use the conditioners right after rinsing the relaxer out and before neutralizing.

Hi Melissa,
I have been using Nexxus Keraphix and Humectress, right after relaxing and leave it on around 30 minutes under a plastic cap. So far my hair has responded well and has stayed soft and healthy. I am a recovering product junkie though trying to stay on the wagon. |

Hey silver!
Thank you for your reply! At the end? Meaning after you neutralize and before styling your hair? I hadn't thought about giving Keraphix a try, but that's a good recommendation. Oh.....it just occurred to me that you may mean you use Keraphix by itself and then follow-up with Humectress as a moisturizer. If so, that's a good idea too! I really like Humectress with Keracare Humecto at other times. Oh yeah, I did try Emergencee once, but I believe I have read that it shouldn't be used as part of the relaxer process. I'll seriously consider using the Keraphix next time. How's your gray coming along? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE gray hair on other people! Shona and I had a thread going on gray hair months ago. I wondered if you were reading it. Hope you're doing well! |

Hey Melissa,
(I'm waving...lol) I've used the PC and it just doesn't work for me even though I kept using it thinking I would see some great results. At one time the 3-n-1 Corrector detangled my hair very well but it doesn't anymore. I don't know why |

I usually use something moisturizing. Keracare Humecto, Nexxus Humectress.
I think I may use Eluence next week. I *will* make it to 300 posts this year!

Hey TooMany! (I'm waving back!!!!)
Yeah see, I didn't think the PC was doing much for me either. I thought it was just O.K. - not enough to justify buying it and using it. But now that I've used the Affirm 5 'n 1, I realize that I dont' know what to expect from or look for in a conditioner used after I rinse the relaxer cream out. I thought it was a good idea to use protein at that stage. The one person who said it wasn't was Michelle, a stylist, who used to be on this board. She didn't elaborate though. So, I'm still researching this one. Hey Dat!!!! How've you been? Long time no hear from! I hope you're fine! Yeah, I'm wondering if moisturizing only is the way to go. I do use a moisturizing treatment later in the touch-up process, but I haven't decided if I want to eliminate the protein altogether. Do you mix your Humecto and Humectress together? When do you you do your first protein treatment after your touch-up and then how often after that (weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly, etc.)? |

Just been trying to GRADUATE! One week left..woot!
I don't mix humectress and humecto together. I usually use one or the other. Sometimes I add evoo, coconut oil, honey, or something else moisturizing. I do a light protein treatmtne the week before and emergencee the week after. And then, after that, I mix humectress and keraphix together every other week. This has been working fine for me, but since I'm on a once a week wash schedule now, I'm thinking of alternating this. I'm also going to switch it up because I'll no longer be using Nexxus after my stock runs out. I'll have enough emergencee for AWHILE, but I'm on my last bottle of keraphix, so I'll probably switch to aubreys GPB. I *will* make it to 300 posts this year!

Awww man, before reading Dat's post I was considering applying a mixture of Emergencia and Aphogee 2-min reconstructor, then a deep moisturizing treatment. But now I'm thinking of doing this mixture the week before. Then right after my touch-up, I'll do the moisturizing treatment. I've been up thinking about this since I saw this thread of Melissa's. This woman had me concentrating so hard, I almost burnt my dinner
Congrats on your graduation Dat |

Congratulations Dat on your academic achievement!!! WOW....I'm reminiscing about that day a long time ago for me. I am excited for you. What's next? If this is getting too personal, please PM and let me know what your next stop in life will be.....MAC Cosmetics, cosmetic chemist??????? The world is yours - get after it girl!!!! Best of luck to you - though you won't need it!!!!
You're switching from your beloved Nexxus? I was shocked to read that. Does the Nexxus switch from salons have you uneasy? You know they are coming out with a new salon version, right? Don't know how the products will compare though. TooMany - I don't know either. I'm confused. I've read a couple of places that protein reverts the hair when used immediately after a relaxer. But, I also read that a lot of ladies use protein right away to begin rebuilding the hair. In fact, I found this board 3 years ago when considering a product that was a liquid protein that you add to relaxers before applying. Well, since you're gonna have your hair relaxed in a salon, you won't have to worry about trying to decide. And I must say that even though the 5 'n 1 left my hair tangled until I use that Wella normalizing conditioner, my hair really came out really nice this time and the 5 'n 1 may have been instrumental. |

I'll be starting grad school in a few months and I'm really excited about the new challenge!
You are right, the switch makes me uneasy. I feel as if it is only a matter of time before they pull a switch and fill it with crap ingredients. Don't the tresseme people claim to have first started in salons? Doesn't bode well for the future of nexxus for me. I'd rather start searching for new products now rather than later. Although when I run out of emergencee IDK what I'm going to do. Aphogee is out. I'm trying to strengthen my hair not throw up. I *will* make it to 300 posts this year!

Hey Dat!
Grad school? Fantastic!!! What are you planning to study? Enjoy your last summer before moving on to deeper waters! Nexxus might find that they have a lot of people like you. For now, I plan to continue buying JC Penney's unsold stock. They have 1 litre each of shampoo and conditioner again (packaged together) and I am waiting for them to reduce it to $12 for both. I'll buy a few of those to buy some time and figure out what I will do next. Aphogee? You're funny! I like it, but I have run out and haven't been in too big a hurry to replenish it. I doubt that I will. I'll continue to use Emergence for a while and then try one of Redken's heavy duty proteins. Talk To You Later! |

The first part of my post should've read 'Melissa's thread' not 'Dat's'. Even though I'm taking Dat's post into consideration. It could be just the tip I need: use something moisturizing instead of the reconstructor/protein treatment after relaxing. Peace.

Re: Touch-Up Conditioners

Melissa,
You're absolutely correct. When I lucked up and found this board and others, I read many women who said that they applied protein/reconstructors right after the relaxing process. So that's what I started doin'. Now that I think about it in the past when I relaxed I didn't use any protein whatsoever. I used what came in the box or whatever products I needed when I used a relaxer that came by itself. Does that make sense? If not, I'll try and explain it better if u want me to. So now I'm thinking to use the protein stuff a week before and/or after relaxing. Maybe a week before and two weeks after. Doing those treatments then and not right after the relaxing may actually be the 'build the protein' process. IDK, just thinking out loud. |

Re: Touch-Up Conditioners

Hey TooMany!
Yes, what you are saying makes perfect sense. It sounds like we are both pondering what we type of conditioner is best after relaxing. I do the protein thing the week before......the last couple of times, I've used Elasta's QP Before and After. It's a protein treatment that you used before and after the relaxer process. I mean that literally. It's in a spray bottle and the directions recommend that you use it as the first step in your relaxer process. You spray it on and sit under a cool dryer and then you use it again after you rinse the chemical from the hair when doing the touch-up. I don't do it this way, but now that I think about it, this is another case of protein being recommended right after the chemical has been rinsed. Anyway, I use this on my last wash before my chemical treatment (about 3-5 days before). I then use Emergence on the first wash after my touch-up. And of course, I'm debating what to use after I wash the chemical out, hence this thread. Thanks for your input! |
