You atre very welcome ! I was suprised that Walgreen's carried so many products too. I hope you two enjoy the 7 day relaxer product like we have. Be sure to mix it with a very moisturizing hair lotion ( I used Kids Organics Shea Butter Detangling Moisturizing Hair Lotion ) or else it makes the hair very dry looking.

Spend, I have tried everything from movies, to music to even trying to bribe her. My 5 year old wants to wear her hair in an afro like her older sister but at her school they take naps. She is not going to get up and re-pick her hair! It was easier when she was younger. I would just wait for her to fall asleep and then do it. Now, it's a battle. I plan on going to Walgreens today to get her the 7 Day Perm. I'm hoping if I tame her hair, she will let me do something to it.
Now, my 9 year old is getting her hair braided this weekend. I will definately post pics of that. She wants her afro to get thicker. At least that's one I don't have to worry about. Even though it takes alot of moisturizer and maintance to care for it, I am extremely pleased that she's not harrassing me about a relaxer. At least not yet. I am on the look out for hairstyles for boys. (Braided) My son is a fanatic about his hair and trying not to wear the same style twice. When I finish his hair, I'll post those pics too. |

The best thing to mix the 7 day Relaxer with is either Lottabody's Blow Drying Lotion or Cantu Daily Shea Butter Moisturizer.
This is what I do, either Shampoo w/Kid's Organics Shea Butter Shampoo or Grins & Giggles Baby Wash - Or Condition Wash w/Alberto VO 5's Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner. Condition w/Pantene's Hydrating Curls or VO 5's Hydrator Hydrating Conditioner. Lightly towel dry work a small amount of the 7day Relaxer in the hair, then mix the 7day relaxer with Lottabody's blowdrying lotion. Work through the hair and let it soak in about 5 minutes. Then work generous amounts of the Cantu Moisturizer thru damp hair. Style hair. This regimen will leave the hair very shiny and full of life. A hairdo of several ponytail twists/or braids should last at least 2-3 days. Be sure to cover hair in a satin cap If you twist the child's hair and depending on the texture, when you remove the twists the child will have lovely waves. Remember not to comb the waves out, but instead finger comb or comb lightly with the widest tooth comb possible. The website www.naturallycurly.com has lots of haircare tips for people with curly, bi-racial or kinky hair. Among the tips are condition washes, and not combing the hair excessively. The site is good for info on products and an overall support site. If more black parents used some of these methods on their young children's hair, they'd be more satisfied with the hair in the long run. The truth, is hair maintenance can be a pain. Period. The thing to remember is to teach your child as they grow and eventually they will take over their haircare. Of course, this takes a while but eventually it happens. I'm really thrilled with the results I've seen using the products above. |

Re: Children's Hair | ||

Okay, I've bought this product and have been looking at it for, oh I don't know, FOREVER, on my counter. My husband is so against me putting this in my daughter's hair. Even though I have explained the process, he even read the posts, but to no avail. He's convinced that it is a perm and it will ruin her hair. So I kind of gave up. This morning when I went to do my baby's hair, before I even picked up the comb, she started crying. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't going to hurt. I washed, conditioned (Kid's Organic Shea Butter Shampoo, Alberto Kiwi Like Conditioner, (Thanks mzlady. I love these 2 products)) then I moisturized with breakfree since it's thick and put oil on to seal the moisture. It was soft and managable. So, instead of the crying, I sent her to her father with her hairbows and the comb. Rule #1 when dealing with a child with thick hair, never take all 4 braids out at once unless you are going to wash it. After about 10 minutes, he brought her to me, with the comb stuck in her hair. He says to me, "there's got to be a better way." Out comes The 7 Day Relaxer.

DO NOT RELAX YOUR CHILD HAIR!!!
Keep you little boys hair short until her gets old enough to do it on his own. Try doing box braids on you girls hair. It will help it to rest and grow. |

Culture's 7 Day Relaxer is NOT a perm. It's results only lasts until you shampoo it. So it's kind of like a pressing comb in a tube.

Re: Children's Hair | ||

People, just read the label. None of the ingredients are harsh. They really just soften the hair and it works best with heat. I only blow dry my nieces hair before I flat-iron it. I use a high setting for that. I try not to use the dryer otherwise, but if I do for ordinary styling, I use warm and dry lightly.
But for regular styling, I use this with the Lottabody Blow Drying Lotion and the Cantu Daily Oil Moisturizer. The 7-day Relaxer is good, but it needs something with oil in it. I would definitely buy the Cantu product. It's excellent. It was recommended by others on this board and I have to say it does not disappoint. Also, I use the Kiwi Lime for Condition Washes only. If you're shampooing, I'd use a conditioner that is more moisturizing, Pantene's Hydrating Curls Conditioner, VO5's Hydrators or Moisturizing Conditioner. Anything like that. I'm sure you're using a wide tooth comb, but it's best to comb hair while it's soaking wet, first while the conditioner is on it, and then while you're rinsing it. And towel dry lightly, just enough to keep the hair from dripping. If your daughter's hair is really hard to comb then you must invest in Johnson & Johnson's No More Tangles. Her hair cannot be worse than mine is in its natural state. I have the coarsest, nappiest hair and even this will untangle it when I wear an afro. Just be sure to use a wide tooth comb. The J&J No More Tangles is excellent when combing the hair dry in-between shampoos. And for tender heads, one of the twins is a tender head and of course she is the one with the most hair, be sure to untangle it in small sections. But please try to get the Cantu Product. You won't be disappointed. The shine is terrific and it also has a softening effect. I'm pleased to report that the twins have been on this regimen for almost 3 months and their hair is in terrific shape. Let me put it this way, their mom who is 'relaxer happy' has not even mentioned the word of late. So I gather that she is pleased not only with the way it looks, but that the hair is more manageable. This is the woman who relaxed her kids 3b/4a hair at 4 years old. Absolutely unreal. Again, the 7 day relaxer is a good product, but it definitely needs a little shine boost with a product like Cantu's Daily Moisturizer or any lotion type moisturizer. I think we could start a revolution of sorts in African American hair care if we spread the word. There are some good products out there and these young kids do not need these no-lye relaxers that are chewing up their hair, balding their edges and leaving their hair dull. BTW, I'm glad you liked the Kid's Organics Shea Butter Shampoo. I use it as well. Love it. |

Re: 7-day relaxer... | ||

You ladies are awesome. I have a couple of tubes of this stuff I bought from Walmart, and was gonna use it on my hair to stretch my own relaxer but I changed my mind about that. Now with the help of this post, I can try it on my granddaughter's hair. She's had her hair relaxed with PCJ and Optimum, but I don't wanna use them types anymore. I've got a lot of questions and would appreciate any advice/tips u ladies have to offer:
Even though she's had relaxers in her hair before, can I apply the 7-day relaxer and it not cause any damage to her hair/scalp? Does this product keep the hair manageable for 7 days? And if so, how often can it be applied? Sorry for all the questions, but I now have more control over her hair than before and like u ladies I don't want anymore harsh chemicals in her hair. To tell u the truth, I'd rather she didn't have any relaxers whatsoever, but her hair is thick and can become very unmanageable. TIA. Peace. |

Hi LadyMoon,
I just copied your instructions for the 7-day relaxer and I'm a bit confused. Hope you don't mind if I ask you a question. At any point, does the relaxer get rinsed out after it has soaked for 5 mins? TIA. Peace. |

Re: 7-day relaxer... | ||
|
toomany,
The 7Day Relaxer is not chemical or permanent. The word 'relaxer' is perhaps misleading. What I think is a better word is hair softener. This works best with heat from a blow dryer. If you read the label, it states that it can be used on relaxed hair. In fact, I've been using it for the past 6 months to stretch out my relaxer. I primarily put it on my edges and in my part. Also, the ingredients are simple and natural. I like this product, but I also use it along with Lottabody's Tress Tranzitions Blow Drying Straightening Lotion. To me, the Culture product is not as moisturizing as I like and adding the Lottabody product boosts the moisture on the hair. But my hair craves moisture. It may work better alone for some. On my nieces' hair I use both. And although I don't blow dry their hair straight all the time, I find that this product makes their hair easier to manage. Their mother finds this too. I mentioned that she had relaxed their hair twice, but now she sees the error of her ways. Especially since their hair is easier to handle now. The relaxer is pretty much gone from their hair now, only on the tips. You can either use this to blow it straight and flat iron, or for looser waves/texture use a warm setting I think the Culture product is worth experimenting with. I've had no damage and neither of have my nieces. It's cheap and I'm curious to see what happens when other people experiment with it. I'll be cutting the relaxer out of my hair this week and I can't wait to work with it on my natural hair. I don't expect it to be straight, but I'm hoping that it gives my hair texture and manageability, especially as it gets longer. But I'll definitely use it when I relax my hair again. It has been wonderful and I've been able to stretch my relaxer to 12 weeks. Something that was impossible for my 4b coarse and resistant hair. |

Re: 7-day relaxer... | ||

Thanx for the explanation Ladymoon. But the instructions on the tube aren't all that clear. Do u rinse it out? Sorry if I sound dense and clueless, but I want my granddaughter's hair to turn out decent.
Another thing is I may just use a blow dryer and not the flat iron. Her hair takes forever to dry. And if time allows, I'll airdry as much as possible. I like her hair in ponytails and cornrows. That's all I really have the patience and time for. I also have the Silkening Shampoo and Detangler by Culture. I don't like the detangler and I haven't tried the poo. Have u tried 'em? TIA. Peace. |

Re: 7-day relaxer... | ||
|
toomany,
I have not tried any of Culture's other products. Kids' Organic Shea Butter Shampoo is the one I'm loving right now. I use it on my hair as well. As for conditioners, nothing beats VO5's Moisture Milks. Great slip and detangling and they're cheap. They're also great for condition washes, something I've also been doing on my nieces' hair. I've been washing twice a month and alternating with condition washes on a weekly basis. I only wash more if they get dirty or go to the pool to get the chlorine out. The 7day Relaxer is a leave-in product that you use after conditioning. I think the trouble you're having is that you're focusing on that word relaxer. As I said in my post above, it's more like a hair softener/moisturizer. I think it says on the tube that the ingredients are filled with vitamins, proteins and strengthening moisturizers. Look at it this way, it's really a conditioning agent. It's merely extra conditioning. You don't have to flat iron. I flat iron the kids hair rarely. After shampooing and conditioning and combing all of the tangles out from the conditioner, I apply the 7day Relaxer to wet hair and work it through/saturate the hair. Use your hands and a wide tooth comb. As I mentioned, since I like a lot of moisture I also use the Lottabody Tress Tranzitions Blow Dry Straightening Lotion. I let the hair air dry a bit and then I use Cantu's Shea Butter Daily Oil Lotion. This is mainly for sheen and more moisture. Then, I lightly dry with a blow dryer on a warm setting. I think it states on the label: "For a loose wavy curl, blow dry using fingers as combs and gently pull the hair straight as you dry." And this is exactly what I do. I hold the dryer in one hand and gently pull/stretch a section of hair. I prefer not to dry the hair completely, but the choice is yours. Then I style their hair in several pony tails, braids or twists. Kids' styles. You are definitely going to need something for sheen. whatever you've been using is probably fine. I like the Cantu product, it's great and I use it too. But I sometimes use a pomade or a hair cream. Sometimes I use a gel like Garnier Fructis wet gel for smoothing the edges. I like using a bit of water to tame frizzy, rough edges. To me, water adds moisture, makes it easier to comb/brush and tames the hair better especially if you add product, a lotion or pomade or gel. A good gel can be versatile and be mixed with other products and even a rich conditioner to tame hair and give it texture. You have to experiment to see which product works best with what and for you. I don't use a lot of the 7Day Relaxer unless I am flat ironing. For regular styles you don't have to use as much, but work it through the hair. Again, this is not a relaxer. It's not going to straighten the hair, just make the hair more manageable through the week. When you take the hair out of the braids and twists to redo, the hair will be very wavy and the hair can be left out like in a twist out. Of course, be sure not to comb the waves out, and instead use your fingers to arrange the hair. But generally, the hair is easier to comb and restyle during the week. And that's what I like and the twins' mother like about the product. Their hair is just easier to maintain. If you ever get around to blowing their hair and flat ironing, the Culture product really delivers. My nieces have 3b/4a hair and I have achieved a sleek hairdo that lasts as long as the hair is covered at night and the humidity is not too high or it doesn't rain. But I don't recommend doing this often for kids' hair. Flat ironing can be damaging when done too frequently. But it's a nice treat for special occasions for kids to wear their hair straight without the harmful effect of a permanent relaxer. And no-lye relaxers are the worst for hair. Remember, if you want more moisture, add the Lottabody product. I use both of these products to stretch my relaxer and smooth my ends. I use a blow dry on hot and a fine tooth comb to do this. Hope this helps. |

You're right MzLadyMoon,
The word 'relaxer' does have me paranoid. My brain's trained to wash out ANY relaxer, but with your assistance, I can rest assure my granddaughter's hair won't be in jeopardy. Her hair is in cornrows right now and probably will be until they start looking raggedy and have to be redone. Its her hair that's in cornrows. No packaged hair in her head b/c I'm not havin' it. You have helped me a great deal and I truly appreciate the time it took you to post this information. You must be a very patient lady. Peace. |
