from natural to relaxed...and breakage |

Hey everyone. I joined this group to gain better understanding of how to reverse my breakage and hair loss woes. Last November my mom permed my hair. She
used Organics Extra Strength (the green container...I threw the jar out earlier). The logic: The last process used on my hair before then was in 2000/2001
plus I have strong thick kinky hair. Since then I've permed my hair myself and now am experiencing major breakage. At first it was around the edges...but
that's grown back. Now I see it's everywhere else. The hair just falls out (combed or touched) and has thinned out. I would allow between 3 weeks
and a month and some change to reapply. Any suggestions on products, techniques, advice, etc. is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking about giving my hair a
perm break and getting double strand twists or a weave. I'm staying away from wigs for now. Even with this decision I could use advice on what type of
hair I should use for a natural look, techniques, and etc. and whether or not I should even bother. I can provide pics of the hair trauma if that would help.

I would like to see the pics of your hair. When I read that you reapply your relaxer every 3 weeks, I truly believe you are relaxing your hair too often. This is making your hair weak and resulting to your hair falling out. I understand your hair is thick and kinky but if you are relaxing within 3 to 3 weeks that's too much. I just reread that you relax 3 weeks and a month. What do you mean? 3 to 4 weeks? I also think it depends on how you relax your hair. You should only reapply to the new growth. You should also keep your hair moisturized. It could be a combination of reasons why your hair is falling out but to avoid hair breakage you should definitely keep your hair moisturize with water base hair products, and make sure not to overprocess your hair. My hair is about 4a/4b texture in some areas and I relax my hair every 6 to 8 weeks. I use to relax every 5 weeks and my hair was getting thin. Now that I extend my relaxer my hair is very healthy. I was able to extend my relaxer by keeping my hair moisturize. |

I agree with NikkiaLove. It sounds like you are perming/relaxing your hair too much. I didn't read anything about protein treatments in your post. Do you
apply enough protein? It helps strengthen the hair, but you don't need much, and after rinsing your protein conditioner, you have to follow up with a
moisturizing conditioner. Every 2-4 days you could try condition washes where you only use a conditioner, no shampoo, after rinsing out conditoner you can deep
condition with a moisturizing conditioner or a rinse-out type conditioner that's moisturizing. You can condition wash with a reconstructor like Motions and
Aphogee, but be sure to deep condition afterwards with a moisturizing conditoner. There's a 'hair recipe' thread on this board with loads of
information about thinning/falling hair using essential/carrier oils and other ingredients that may be a big help to you. HTH. Peace.

The thread is called 'Essential Oils and Hair Care'. You may also want to check out www.longhaircareforum.com and www.blackhairmedia.com. Both of these
sites are excellent and the ladies have much info you could use.
